In a briefing just before 6:30 p.m., police said they did not reveal any other indications of a possible third suspect and are seeking advice on shelter. Block 3600 on Shelbourne Street remained closed as emergency crews awaited the arrival of the RCMP bomb team from the mainland due to a possible explosive device on a vehicle believed to be related to the suspects. “The information is unclear about this and we are trying to confirm it,” Sanic police chief Dean Duthy told a news conference late in the afternoon at the department’s headquarters. “We are taking all necessary security measures, we have asked all these areas around the bank to stay in their homes and lock their doors.” Police plan to inform the public, he said, through the media and social media. Three of the injured GVERT officers are members of the Saanich Police Department, while the others are members of the Victoria Police Department. Both departments stand behind all members and their families in this traumatic moment, said both Duthie and current VicPD chief Colin Watson. Although he could not provide further details on the exact condition of the officers who were treated, Duthie said in a statement: “We expect some officers to be released after emergency treatment, while others were seriously injured and taken to the operating room.” No civilians were injured in the first incident. “As far as I know about this chaotic, tragic, dynamic, violent scene, the fact that no citizen was injured in any way is truly amazing and I am so grateful for that. “The police were really injured because they did what they signed up to do, to protect the public, to respond to the danger and to keep people safe,” Duthie said. More updates on the status of the officers will be available as soon as they become available.
